School Uniform

St Mary’s C E Primary School is proud to have a uniform that promotes belonging, equality and pride in our community. Our uniform expectations are designed to be affordable, inclusive, anti‑racist, and fully compliant with the Department for Education’s statutory guidance on the cost of school uniform.
This page provides all the information families need, including compulsory items, where to buy uniform, second‑hand uniform availability, and our presentation expectations.

Compulsory Uniform Items

(Effective from September 2026)

Following parent consultation and in line with DfE statutory guidance, St Mary’s requires only three branded items:
• Branded jumper/cardigan
• Branded blazer
• Branded kilt (girls)
All other items may be purchased from any supermarket, generic retailer, or Ace Clothing.
Parents may continue purchasing optional branded items (e.g., book bag, rucksack, coat, hat, scarf) if they wish.

Unbranded items

Parents may purchase all non‑branded items from any retailer, including supermarkets and high‑street shops.

This ensures families have full choice over price and quality.
Transition period
Parents may continue purchasing branded versions of non‑branded items while we transition and existing stock is depleted.
Second‑Hand Uniform
St Mary’s is committed to keeping uniform affordable for all families. In line with DfE statutory guidance, we provide regular opportunities to purchase good‑quality second‑hand uniform at low cost.
Availability

We hold termly second‑hand uniform sales. Dates are published on:

• The school website
• Newsletters
• ClassDojo
Families may also contact the school office if they require second‑hand uniform outside these dates.
Donations

We welcome donations of clean, good‑condition uniform. Items can be dropped off at the school office.

Support for families

If you are experiencing financial difficulty, please speak to the school office in confidence. We will always do our best to support you.

Boys and Girls

  • White polo shirt with collar
  • Navy blue v-neck sweatshirt*
  • Navy blue tracksuit bottoms
  • Navy blue socks or tights
  • Black school shoes
  • Suitable outdoor coat for the weather (parents may choose any plain dark-coloured coat)
  • Navy blue hat and scarf (optional)
  • Navy gloves (optional)
  • Navy hijab (optional)

Reception to Year 6

Boys

  • Navy blue official school blazer*
  • Navy blue v-neck sweatshirt*
  • White school shirt with collar
  • Dark grey school trousers
  • Navy blue socks
  • Black school shoes
  • Suitable outdoor coat for the weather (parents may choose any plain dark-coloured coat)
  • Navy blue hat and scarf (optional)
  • Navy gloves (optional)

Girls

  • Navy blue official school blazer*
  • Navy blue v-neck sweatshirt or cardigan*
  • White school shirt with collar
  • Official school kilt*
  • Navy blue socks or tights
  • Black school shoes
  • Suitable outdoor coat for the weather (parents may choose any plain dark-coloured coat)
  • Navy blue hat and scarf (optional)

PE UNIFORM (NURSERY TO YEAR 6)

Boys and Girls

  • White t-shirt (branded or unbranded)
  • Navy blue shorts or navy blue jogging bottoms
  • Black plimsolls

No branded PE kit is required.

These lists include all compulsory items, optional branded extras, and permitted colours.
Hair, Jewellery & Presentation
St Mary’s follows an anti‑racist, Halo‑aligned approach to hair and presentation.

We welcome and respect:

• Natural Afro‑textured hair
• Locks, braids, twists, cornrows, plaits
• Protective styles
• Cultural hairstyles
• Religious head coverings (navy or black)
General expectations:
• Hair longer than shoulder length should be tied back for safety
• Hair accessories must be plain navy or black
• Hairbands should be simple and slim (no more than 5mm)
• Large bows, ribbons, bobbles or novelty accessories are not permitted for safety reasons
Jewellery & make‑up
• Small stud earrings only
• Watches permitted (no smart watches)
• No other jewellery
• No make‑up or nail varnish
Affordability & Support

St Mary’s ensures uniform remains affordable by:

• Requiring only three branded items
• Allowing all other items to be purchased from any retailer
• Offering termly second‑hand uniform sales
• Supporting families with uniform grants where available
• Avoiding unnecessary changes to uniform
